Venice became a wealthy trading powerhouse that dominated trade routes from the late 13th Century into the 17th Century.
Its system of elected dukes or doges provided a stable government, while others endured civil wars and invasions.
The wealth of Venice bought immunity from the troubles of the times.
They simply employed mercenaries or they gained their ends through use of generous bribes.
The Zecchino or Ducat, as it is better known, was minted continuously from 1284 through 1797. The method of coining the ducats has not changed throughout their history; they were all hammered coins.
